Abruzzo and Umbria

 

DAY 01: ROME - TAGLIACOZZO - SULMONA - PESCARA

Departure from Hotel Cicerone, Rome, at 08.30. Departure for the Abruzzo Region with a stop in the town of Tagliacozzo, a city that is part of the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy with its medieval buildings at the foot of the Marsica mountains. Visit. Continuation to Sulmona, the city of the poet Ovidio, the confetti, typical bonbon used in ceremonies and the medieval aqueduct.  Lunch at your own, visit and departure to Pescara. Overnight in Pescara.

 

DAY 02: PESCARA - LANCIANO - ORTONA - PESCARA

Breakfast at the Hotel. This morning visit Pescara, the largest town in the region, a modern city that emerged on the ancient remains after the serious bombing of World War II. Here he great poet Gabriele D'Annunzio was born. Modern buildings alternate with a palace in the liberty style of the beginning of the 20th century and mansions from the Bourbon era. Next, departure for Lanciano, the city of the Eucharistic miracle that took place in the 18th century. Highlights the Church of San Francesco, a symbol of the event, the Cathedral and the medieval center. Lunch on your own. In the afternoon, visit of Ortona, city of Roman origin and the Aragonese fortress. Return to your Hotel. Overnight in Pescara.

 

DAY 03: PESCARA - GIULIANOVA - TERAMO – L’AQUILA - PESCARA

Breakfast at the Hotel. This morning depart for Giulianova, one of the largest villages of the Adriatic, a city that hides in its historic center buildings from different eras, elegant churches, and chapels, palaces that recall the ancient splendor of the city. Continue to Teramo, ancient Italic and Roman city, halfway between the Apennines and the Coast. Around the Piazza del Municipio, an elegant and fascinating urban ensemble develops between palaces and churches of medieval times. Lunch on your own. Finally, arrival to L'Aquila, capital of the region, Roman and medieval city, famous for its Fontana Delle 99 cannelle, the Cathedral and for being an important university center. Return to your Hotel. Overnight in Pescara.

 

DAY 04: PESCARA - GRAN SASSO - TIVOLI - MARMORE - SPOLETO - ASSISI

Breakfast at the Hotel. This morning you will travel along the Panoramic roads that lead to the highest Apennines Massif, the Gran Sasso, surrounded by a mountain village, ideal places for a summer stroll and a base for skiing in winter. Continue to Tivoli with a stop in the historic center, where gardens, old houses, and baroque villas dominate the borough a few kilometers from Rome. Lunch on your own. In the afternoon, on the way to Spoleto, short stop at Marmore to admire the most beautiful Italian falls in the heart of Umbria. Continue to Spoleto, city of 40,000 inhabitants of Roman origin that keeps symbolic monuments like the Bridge of the Towers or the Arch of Drusus and more recent like the Cathedral and the Albornozian Rock. Continue to your Assisi Hotel. Overnight in Assisi.

 

DAY 05: ASSISI - PERUGIA - TODI - ASSISI

Breakfast at the Hotel. A nice walk in the old town of Assisi will end with a visit of the Basilica of Saint Francis. Then depart for Perugia, the capital of the Umbrian region, ancient Etruscan center and rich city of history and art. You can admire the Palazzo dei Priori, the Fontana Maggiore, the Etruscan Gate, the Cathedral and the medieval wall. Free time for lunch. Continue for Todi. In the afternoon, stroll through the historic center of this pretty walled village and protected by the Rock of 1373; you can see the Cathedral, the People's Square, the Palace of Priors and the Church of Consolation, built by Bramante. Return to Assisi via panoramic itinerary. Overnight in Assisi.

 

DAY 06: ASSISI - GUBBIO – CITTA' DI CASTELLO - ASSISI

Breakfast at the Hotel. In the morning visit of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli at the bottom of the hill of Assisi. Continue to Gubbio, a beautiful city that is located 500 meters above sea level and shows traces of different dominations, from the Roman to the papal. Highlights include the Cathedral, the Ducal Palace, the Capitán's Palace and the Palazzo Dei Consoli. Then continue to Città di Castello. After lunch at leisure visit the city, the largest center of the Upper Tiber Valley, which presents narrow and picturesque streets along with majestic and elegant squares, where some of the historical palaces of greater interest and beauty arise. Return to Assisi via panoramic itinerary. Overnight in Assisi.

 

DAY 07: ASSISI - ORVIETO – ROME

Breakfast at the Hotel. You leave Assisi to reach the most important city on the way between Umbria and Rome, Orvieto. The Gothic Cathedral, imposing and elaborate, is worth the visit. The Pozzo di San Patrizio offers a nice corner to breathe the medieval city air, taste the excellent wines or the renowned food. Lunch at leisure. Return to Rome and end of services
