2nd day - Villa Lante - Bomarzo

Depart from the hotel after breakfast to visit first of all Villa Lante’s garden, with abundant water features of cascades, fountains and grottoes, and superb stone carving. You enjoy a visit with a local guide of the gardens. The visit lasts from about 09.45 until 12.00 hrs. You then drive to the Parco dei Mostri and have time to enjoy your packed lunch in the picnic area here. Then you have a visit on your own of the bizarre collection of both eccentric and delightful stone ‘beasts’ and ‘monsters’, dating from the mid 16th Century. You return to Viterbo and have some free time until the included dinner. Overnight stay at the hotel.

3rd day - Villa Farnese - Viterbo

You leave after breakfast for the half day visit to Villa Farnese, about 12 miles south of Viterbo. A local guide will conduct the tour of the gardens. Hailed as a magnificent masterpiece, the garden here harmonises landscape, architecture and sculpture and bursts with a spectacular water feature, the Casino del Piacere, dating from about 1560. You will arrive back in Viterbo at about 13.30 hrs. The remainder of the day will be at leisure back at your hotel, with time to visit Viterbo. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

4th day - Villa d’Este – Villa Adriana

Departure after breakfast. You head south towards Rome for two incredible visits before reaching your hotel. The first visit, at about 10.00 hrs with a local guide, is to the Villa d’Este, now a UNESCO world heritage site and an impressive garden of man-made terraces, fountains, grottoes, nymphs, often considered a model for European gardens thereafter. At about 13.00 hrs you stop for your packed lunch in the Piazza Garibaldi about 5 minutes’ walk from the Villa d’Este. Then about 14.00 hrs you are transferred by coach to Villa Adriana nearby where you are met by your local guide for the visit. Villa Adriana was the villa of the Emperor Hadrian and even in its ruined state is one of the most spectacular Roman gardens and an impressive monument to antiquity. The garden recreated a sacred landscape and a hydraulic system fed water to the main structures. Today it is still a magical site with wild flowers, meadows, tall cypresses, fishpond and pool remaining as features. Journey time from here to the hotel is about one hour and the estimated arrival at the hotel near Frascati is about 18.30 hrs. You have time to settle in to your hotel before dinner at 20.00 hrs at the hotel.

5th day - Giardino di Ninfa

Departure after breakfast for the journey through the Alban Hills south into the Pontine marshes towards Ninfa. Journey time is about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The garden of Ninfa is an amazingly special place and perhaps the perfect garden. A guide here conducts the visit. You will witness the verdant location, fed by streams from the hillsides, the impact on the plants of temperatures that rarely fall below 10 degrees Centigrade, the dilapidated walls of the village buildings that provide a microclimate for rare plants to flourish, trees and walls flowercovered and there are scents of rose and jasmine. This is a fantastic collection of plants from all over the world that flourish in this idyllic site. A packed lunch is provided today and will be taken at Pantanello about a km from Ninfa and then you are taken to Castel Gondolfo for some free time to explore. After a fascinating day, return to the hotel about 16.00 hrs for some free time before the included dinner this evening at 20.00 hrs at the hotel.

6th day - Giardini della Landriana

You leave the hotel at 09.00 hrs this morning highlight of the day which is a visit with a guide to the Giardini della Landriana.Occupying 25 acres and created since 1956, this is a rarity in Italy due to the scale of the separate compartments and the combination of luxuriant English planting and formal Italian structure. The garden is a mass of colour from April to October. Whites, blues, olives, citrus, cottage-style mauves and yellows abound. Formal and informal ‘rooms’ open and close in speedy succession. The influence of Russell Page is evident. Your packed lunch can be taken after the visit to Landriana in the picnic area outside the gardens. Transfer back to the hotel at about 16.00 hrs to relax before dinner at 20.00 hrs in the hotel.
