Umbria: St. Francis Life & Works

1st day - Arrival

Arrival in Rome at Fiumicino airport meet and greet with our tour manager and departure by coach to Assisi. Arrival in Assisi for the dinner. Overnight at the hotel.

2nd day - Assisi

In the morning visit to the Basilic of St. Francis, which consists of two superimposed churches, Basilica Inferiore and Basilica Superiore, resting on a series of immense arches, with frescoes of Simone Martini, Cimabue and the masterpieces of Giotto. In the Basilica Inferiore, at the bottom of the steps, is St Francis’ Tomb which is both impressive and evocative. At the end of the visit to the Basilica walking tour of the city center of Assisi: piazza del Comune with the elegant Palazzo dei Priori, Minerva temple, the small artisan shops and passing close to Palazzo Giacobe where is hosted a copy of Laudes Creaturum, (Praise of the Creatures), the religious song composed by Saint Francis of Assisi. Free time for the lunch. In the aernoon visit to the Santa Chiara Basilica and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the chapel of La Porziuncola, where Saint Francis founded the Franciscan Order. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Optional : each Saturday evening at 21.00 in Porziuncola, Rosary and candlelight procession. No supplement needed.

3rd day – Assisi / Monteluco / Spoleto / Piediluco / Rieti

Departure aer breakfast for Monteluco to visit the grotto where Saint Francis prayed and where a church was built. Continuation with the visit of Spoleto, nice medieval village, famous for the “Music Festival Dei due Mondi”. Free time for lunch. In the aernoon road to Piediluco to visit a church of Saint Francis and its wonderful lake. Arrival in the evening to Rieti. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight at the hotel

4th day – Rieti

In the morning visit of Rieti. The city played backdrop to numerous episodes and miracles that prove Saint Francis’ profound love of art and all creatures. The miracle of the cither, a tribute to spirituality and music, took place in the Papal Palace. The episode of the gi of the cloak to the women who was poor and blind occurred at the oratory, further testimony of the poor Saint who loved the poor. In the aernoon visit to the the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Foresta.. Immersed in lush green woods and cradled by the sounds of natural springs, the Ragged Saint probably wrote the immortal Canticle of All Creatures. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

5th day – Rieti / Greccio / Terminillo / Rome

Aer breakfast departure to visit the Sanctuary of Greccio, an extraordinary fusion of architecture and nature, famous because Saint Francis chose it as the backdrop to one of the highest and most lyrical moments in his life: the first recreation of the Bethlehem Nativity in Christianity on Christmas Eve, 1223. Greccio and its Franciscan Sanctuary have recently become one of the 754 properties included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 13 Pope Pius XII declared Saint Francis the Patron Saint of Italy. In order to celebrate the event, the Franciscan friars decided to build a monument on Terminillo at 1623 m above sea level and so they erected the National Votive Temple. Work began in 14 and 25,000 cubic meters of rock was carved out in order to house the church which was consecrated in 164. The building is a harmonious fusion of architecture, mosaics, sculptures and church ornaments of high artistic quality. A casket in the Saint Francis chapel holds the most precious relic: an urn containing the remains of the Saint in front of which a votive lamp burns eternally. In the aernoon road to Rome. 6th day – Rome

Visit of the Ancient Rome with particular focus on the Palatine hill: here Saint Francis lived many times when he was in Rome. Visit of the Roman Forum: public life in ancient Rome was carried out here, between the closed spaces of the Basilicas and the open ones of the square itself, between the Senate and the temples honoring the orgins of Rome and its mythical founders. Visit of the Coliseum also known as the Flavian amphitheater aer its iniator Vespasian, first of the Flavian emperors who had it built in the 1st century A.D. It is the largest amphitheater of the ancient world. In the aernoon visit to Santa Sabina church, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme church and Sain John Cathedral, all frequented by the Saint during his roman stays. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Optional: at 7.00 pm transfer by private coach to the community of Sant’Egidio in Trastevere (a very famous movement of lay people with more than 60,000 members, dedicated to evangelisation and charity, in Rome, Italy and in more than 73 countries throughout the world), to pray with the members of the community in Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica. Dinner will be changed with the lunch

7th day – Rome

In the morning visit to Saint Peter’s Basilica and the area where Saint Francis met Pope Innocenzo III.
In the aernoon visit to the Sanctuary of Saint Francis in Ripa, in Trastevere area. The adjacent convent accommodated him and in the cell where the saint lived, a black stone he had used as a cushion. In the garden of the friary is an orange tree, which according to the tradition was planted by St Francis.

8th day – Departure

Aer breakfast transfer to Fiumicino airport and end of the tour
